DOC file format is used by all versions of Microsoft Word. Other text processors, like OpenOffice.org Writer, can read and save documents in this format.

_bm23 Note: In order to obtain counts for DOC files you need to have Microsoft Office Word installed on your computer.

In addition to usual text counting, AnyCount can optionally count text in headers, footers, footnotes, end notes, text boxes, shapes, embedded and linked documents, comments and hidden text in DOC files.

Headers and Footers

Header and footer is a small text identifier which runs through the top and bottom of the document.

Embedded and Linked Objects

Embedded object is a file which is inserted into destination file you have to count. Once embedded, the object becomes an integral part of the destination file. To insert embedded object into destination file in Microsoft Office, on the Insert menu click Object command.

Linked object is similar to embedded object, the only difference is that when using Object command Link to file check box is selected. All changes made in source file, will be displayed in destination file.

arrowExample: You can embed Excel table in DOC file or link them.

AnyCount can also ignore identical text in headers and footers.

exampleExample. Sometimes document can be divided into several sections. As a rule each section has its own header and footer, but they can be similar. That is why there can be a situation when you have double counts due to those identical footers and headers. To avoid this situation select check box Ignore Identical Headers/Footers.

_bm23 Note: As a rule AnyCount count results are similar to those provided by MS Word statistics feature, but sometimes there can be differences.

The reasons for the difference are the following:

AnyCount optionally counts headers, footers, text boxes, shapes, embedded and linked objects, comments and notes, whereas MS Word up to version 2003 does not. MS Word 2007 counts text boxes, shapes, footnotes and end notes, which means that you may get different results by counting same file in MS Word 2003 and MS Word 2007.
AnyCount does not count text format elements (e. g. list bullets), because they represent the result of formatting only, and MS Word does.
