In the practice of any translator, there are clients with a wide variety of file formats. They use not only text formats, such as DOC, DOCX, RTF, TXT, presentations, or spreadsheets, but also PDF, so there is a need for proper PDF word count.
As you may know, PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It is a file format developed by Adobe in the 1990s to present documents, including text formatting and images. PDF files can include different types of content, such as flat text, images, icons, interactive components, links, layers, and more.
The PDF format’s significant advantage is that many users can open and view the file, whether they have a program to open source file or not. In essence, the format allows you to exchange documents and open them without buying a large number of different specialized software tools.
Since many translators face the problem of PDF word count, there is a need for a proper word count tool. PDF readers are usually unable to read a file in the same manner as a word processor does. Word processors can’t do a word count. But there are some ways you can handle this.
Convert your PDF file to text. Some types of PDF files you can save as text. However, this can be quite inconvenient, and it will significantly complicate your workflow. Also, this option will not work if your PDF is an image. Then, to convert the image to text, you need special software.
Another way to do a PDF word count is to use an online word count tool developed specifically for this purpose. All you need to do is to upload your files in the online tool. The disadvantage of this method is that usually, you can count only a few documents for free. Then you should subscribe to a word count service.
